Events Introduction

Tie Fengzheng’s live performance of their album A City’s Rural Outskirts

Time: 6:00pm – 7:20pm

Location: UCCA Café

Tickets: Free

Tie Fengzheng was one of China’s first “new music” bands, and has been signed to ShiLong Music since 2012. A simple set with guitars, bass, and a drum kit, they are very much a “band” in the traditional sense, known for their fluid light rock melodies and lyrics that often ring hauntingly true. A City’s Rural Outskirts is an album telling their disaffection from society, and their search for others who share their music and their point of view.

Wang Mai: Dire Straits Night Viewing

Time: 6:00pm – 10:00pm

Location: UCCA NAVE

Tickets: Free

For this exhibition, Wang has created an immersive environment that completely fills the UCCA’s soaring Nave, transforming it into a spectacular, absurdist landscape that is part waterway and part forest, an analysis of both a disappearing past and an uncertain future. The metaphor of the strait — a narrow divide that must be controlled and that often creates tension — allows Wang Mai to posit a parallel between the physical space in which the exhibition takes place and the wider geopolitical background against which it unfolds. Curated By Wang Xingwei: Specificity Night Viewing

Time: 6:00pm – 10:00pm

Location: UCCA Long Gallery

Tickets: Free

In the final instalment of the long-running “Curated By…” exhibition series, the work of seven young artists Liu Weijian, Wang Xingjie, Wen Ling, Xia Guanglong, Zhan Yingxiang, Zhang Shujian, and Zhang Wuyun., as selected by one of China’s most interesting and intelligent painters, is showcased together for the first time. NOTES ON THE OTHER
Sergio Oksman / 14’ / 2009 / Spain.

Synopsis:

On July 7, 1961, the day Ernest Hemingway was buried, one of his most famous impersonators was seen at the Festival of San Fermín in Pamplona. That strange appearance was merely a signal that, from that moment onwards, the figure of the famous writer would last in time via a throng of impersonators.

The movie was shot during Pamplona’s Festival of San Fermín in 2008, in Key West (Florida) and in the house where Hemingway committed suicide in Ketchum (Idaho). One of the main characters is Pío Guerendiáin, a methodical and constant photographer who has spent more than 50 years taking pictures of the “encierros” (running of bulls in the streets) from the very same corner.

ESSENCE

Director: Jorge Creuheras / 71’ / 2011 / Mexico

Synopsis:

This film is a passageway into different communities in Chiapas, Mexico, showing the essence of local life – a spirituality and close connection to the land. It documents the battle of those who preserve the lively light of our world, fighting every day to resist imposing political and commercial systems.
