Chengdu, a city that radiates youthful vitality, weaves together the wisdom of its ancient heritage with a global perspective, shaping a rhythm uniquely its own—light, effortless, and deeply resonant. From April 25th to June 30th, 2025, the First Chengdu IFS ART PROJECT, themed “Everyday Sparkles,” invites audiences to immerse themselves into an artistic dialogue shaped by the city’s distinctive tempo.
The Chengdu IFS 2025 Art Project is organized by Chengdu IFS and presented by UCCA Lab, a division under UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, one of China’ s leading contemporary art institutions. Shirley Liu, UCCA Lab Art Director, serves as the project’s Art Consultant. Supported by the Consulat Général de France à Chengdu, Institut français de Chine, this project brings together five renowned artists, musicians, and theater creators from around the world. Under the theme “Everyday Sparkles,” it explores the interplay between artistic expression, public space, and urban culture in a "symphony" set against the distinctive landscape of Chengdu IFS.
At the heart of this project is sound, which transcends beyond its conventional boundaries into a dynamic spatial experience. Chengdu-born musician Huang Jin draws inspiration from the traditional Chinese “Eight Tones” classification, transforming percussive rhythms into a dialogue between traditional and contemporary soundscapes. Meanwhile, Chinese-British musician Eric Lau crafts an auditory journey through the city, layering electronic synthesis with field recordings from Chengdu’ s everyday life. Artist duo Wade and Leta, known for their striking visual language, translate rhythm into form, enabling audiences to perceive harmony through colors and shapes. For this project, they debut a new kinetic installation, integrating their visual compositions with the soundscapes by Huang Jin and Eric Lau to create an immersive, multi-sensory experience.
Beyond sound and space, the concept of symphony expands into broader artistic expressions. French illustrator Alice Des presents “Marée Haute, Marée Basse” at the L7 Art Gallery, evoking the tranquil allure of a sunlit beach at low tide. In May, theater artist Shen Xintong will lead audiences on a whimsical journey with a puppetry parade and shadow play, immersing the public in an imaginative spectacle of light and movement.
A city is a living symphony. “Everyday Sparkles” captures the convergence of diverse ideas across time and place, where individual voices harmonize into a collective performance. Each person becomes a vibrant note in this ever-evolving composition. Against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains, Chengdu—this park city with three millennia of history, plays a symphony that belongs to all.
Wade and Leta live and work in New York, USA. Their philosophy is to “make music for your eyes”. They aspire to create art that is connected to daily life for as many people as humanly possible. Their work exists in a multitude of mediums, from sculpture to painting, product, and place, with an aim for the pleasure of their work to be reflected in the people who experience it.
