A Girlfriend’s Letter In Court—A Discussion on Art Copyright

Part of the ongoing exhibition “Zhao Bandi: China Party,” A Case of Love Gone Wrong for Pandaman is a video satire starring artist Zhao Bandi. The piece was made in response to two media outlets’ misuse of a photo by the artist. In the video, Zhao reads aloud a letter from his supposed long-distance “girlfriend,” who expresses numerous doubts as to the authenticity of the disputed photograph.
UCCA invites renowned collector and lawyer Liu Gang, and artist Zhao Bandi to discuss the issue of art copyright. When a piece of art is illegally duplicated or plagiarized, how can the original artist appeal to the law? What does the process of copyrighting art entail? What happens when a copyrighted artwork is used outside of its intended purpose?

Liu Gang is a co-founder of the Commerce & Finance Law Offices, and a graduate of Peking University’s Law School. He works in the areas of foreign investment, corporate finance, securities, and international trade. Mr. Liu is also an art collector, and author of the book Collecting Time.
Zhao Bandi (Artist)
Zhao Bandi is a renowned artist and pioneering figure of the Chinese avant-garde movement. His practice has evolved to include performance, photography, video, fashion, film, and social intervention. His projects have been exhibited in the Palais de Tokyo, Venice Biennale, Sydney Biennale, and a number of museums around the world.
