Despite the sensitive nature of the Chinese film industry, and the strict controls on public cinema viewings Chinese queer cinema is booming, female filmmakers are making their voices heard and China’s many ethnic minorities are both telling their stories and having their stories told by others. In this special panel event we ask when alternative voices will start being heard in mainstream Chinese cinema and how far the alternative industry has to go.
