In these ever-changing times, people’s cultural consciousness is undergoing a drastic transformation with the rapid alterations of lifestyle. Abandoning the old practices of earlier generations, people today are more dedicated to exploring the unknown territories of the world at the cost of losing their cultural and spiritual inheritance. Based on her works such as Katatsumori and Embracing, Naomi Kawase spent twenty years following her foster mother’s life as she lives out her time, steadily approaching death. The film is not only a delicate display of the life of an individual but is more of a contemplation on human relationships and the role that we play in our society.
