Named “constellation” by director Chikara Iwai, Kikoe is an experimental documentary about experimental music. Well-known Japanese experimental musician Yoshihide Ohtomo interviews musicians, artists, and writers from Japan and around the world. Also featuring videos of numerous live performances, this film synthesizes and distills millions of voices, sounds, characters, and shadows from across the globe.
If experimental music is explained as the language of noise and silence, the nature of this documentary is indeed appropriate. It pays little attention to its coherence or narrative flow, but rather allows a reality to emerge from the rhythms, textures, and streams of consciousness that will appeal even to those who are new to experimental music.
After the screening, musician and writer Yan Jun will share the stories of film director Chikara Iwai and present his own experiential sound projects.
