July 13 is the 120th birthday of litterateur Isaac Babel, called the Great Magician of Russia, whose main works have been published in mainland China and Taiwan. When this talented author was arrested in 1939, all manuscripts of his novels were confiscated by the Soviet Union, including two collections never previously published. It was only recently that they resurfaced. The only two novels in those collections that haven’t been translated into Chinese hold the same historical importance as Kavalleriekorps and The Tales of Odessa. All of these novels have been compiled into the Babel Novels Collection. The three honored guests of this lecture – Wang Tianbing, scholar; Liu Suli, Book Critics will talk about those two novels. They will explore the contents, patterns, and connotation of Babel’s work through a historical context, touching on the process of Soviet industrialization and agriculture. This kind of exploration will enlighten Chinese audiences and serve as a warning for contemporary China.
