Taking imagery as its subject, this forum engages contemporary dilemmas in painting. Curator Dai Zhuoqun narrates two theses encompassing his own opinions and research on the topic. The first presents imagery as a response to the relationship between current painting practices and Chinese painting traditions. As s self-sufficient painting system that has lasted for over a thousand years, ancient Chinese painting has no precedent of realism or abstraction. Instead, the spirit becomes written form. The second topic considers the unprecedented revolutions in painting over the past century. The intersection of these two issues is intended to break through artificial barriers between traditional and contemporary Chinese painting. The imagery is the point of incision for directly confronting the essence of painting.
