A sensuous consular wife in India during the 1930s, Delphine Seyrig is Anne-Marie Stretter, a figure who appears in Duras' films repeatedly. The wife of the French ambassador to India deals with anxiety after her affair is discovered and she is disgraced. The emotional agony is depicted through the off-screen whispering of gossiping harpies, government attachés, and servants, making the main action aural rather than visual. Although India Song—with themes of decadence, passion, and loss—is supposed to be set in India, it was shot entirely in a Boulogne mansion (le Palais Rothschild). The scenes in a luxurious Palais evoke the notions of exile and displacement. A beautiful exposition on isolation incorporating haunting images from Duras' youth in colonial Indochine is implied. For Duras, Calcutta, a place she never visited, represents a place of sorrow within its own charm.
