"Kentridge in Parallel" is a series of screenings running throughout the exhibition at UCCA that puts the artist's works into conversation with historical, formal, and social referents.

Highly infectious, the scores of William Kentridge's animations are created by his long-time collaborator Philip Miller. Contributing to The Refusal of Time, Black Box, and other pieces, his compositions combine classical and contemporary genres with elements from South African folk music. The documentary Searching for Sugar Man tells a story about Sixto Rodriguez, a Detroit folksinger who had a short-lived recording career with only two well received but non-selling albums. Unknown to Rodriguez, his musical story continued in South Africa where he became a pop music icon and inspiration for generations. Here we explore different styles of music presentation in South Africa, and the important role music plays in these films.
