About This Program

In this lecture, renowned screenwriter Lu Wei will discuss his career and screenwriting techniques along with writer Wang Tianbing. Their conversation will cover universal principles of scriptwriting, practical filmmaking tips, and a case study of the film White Deer Plain. While probing the relationship between genre and art, Lu will also analyze several of his important works.

Lu Wei is a renowned Chinese screenwriter. His award-winning films include Farewell My Concubine (Palme d’Or, Cannes, 1993); To Live (Grand Jury Prize and Prize of the Ecumenical Jury, Cannes, 1994); and Tuya's Marriage (Golden Bear, Berlin Film Festival, 2007).

Wang Tianbing is a writer and scholar. He has planned, edited, and written over twenty different books, including editing a Chinese translation of the works of Isaac Babel. He also wrote a monograph on Babel entitled The End of the Cossacks and a book of interview records entitled In Love with Isaac Babel.
