UCCA Center for Contemporary Art presents “Michael Cherney: Middle Distance” from January 17 to April 12, 2026. Bringing together works from multiple series, this exhibition offers a panoramic survey of the artist's creative journey since the mid-1990s with photograph as his primary medium. On January 17, the exhibition's opening day, UCCA will host two public programs to introduce Cherney's multi-faceted practice.
The Opening Guided Tour will be led by the artist and curator, who will share insights into several of Cherney's major series. The tour will explore his diverse thematic approaches—ranging from the microscopic to the macroscopic, and from historical sites to natural landscapes—as well as the thinking behind traditional mounting formats like handscrolls, albums, and hanging scrolls. This offers a closer look at Cherney's signature low-resolution, high-granularity visual style. The Guided Tour will also feature an in-depth look at the Ten Thousand Li of the Yangtze River series (2010–2015), presented here on a large scale for the first time, along with the artist's latest work, 苏-Thoreau (2025).
Subsequently, the artist and audience will move to the UCCA Alcove for “As It Unfolds: Opening Workshop on Handscrolls”, where Cherney's handscrolls and albums can be viewed up close. The workshop will feature Waters of Canglang from the “Tracing the Water Classic” series, a geographical exploration inspired by the writings of Li Daoyuan.
Two scrolls from the Ten Thousand Li of the Yangtze River series, Jiangkou and Shenpu, will also be unfurled to offer a contemporary photographic portrayal of the Yangtze that invites viewers to trace historical geographical coordinates against the present-day landscape. Additionally, Mount Hua from the bounded by mountains will present another vision of mountain scenery. As the album pages slowly unfold, the experience will evoke a passage through undulating “mountain pages,” with the viewer’s gaze shifting between detail and totality, allowing different layers of imagery to emerge through changing modes of perception.
