1969, Jacques Demy, 95 minutes
In Jacques Demy’s first American film, a confused young architect navigates the streets of Los Angeles looking for love and meaning. One of the most approachable filmmakers to appear in the wake of the French New Wave, Demy was uninterested in the formal experimentation of Alain Resnais and the political agitation of Jean-Luc Godard. Instead, Demy constructed a self-contained fantasy world closer to that of François Truffaut, drawing on musicals, fairytales, and the golden age of Hollywood.
