Non-profit art spaces, as the name suggests, are independent of commercial systems. Mostly organized by nongovernmental groups, these spaces stimulate and support young, experimental art. Non-profit art spaces are not new to China, with many idealists bringing this Western institutional model to China around the turn of the century. These alternative spaces offered exhibition opportunities for young and unknown artists while encouraging them to experiment without concern for the market. However, most of these organizations either closed or became commercial galleries due to a lack of support.

For the newest edition of the “New Artrends” Talk Series, UCCA invites James Elaine, founder of Telescope project space, along with three Chinese practitioners to discuss the sustainability of non-profit spaces in China.
