Telling stories based on the truth can present many problems, not just in journalism and not just in China. Whether it be journalism, non-fiction writing, or documentary filmmaking, each writer must overcome these obstacles in order to communicate these stories effectively with the audience. In China, these obstacles may be greater than in most other places. Unfortunately, there is currently no dialogue between these different types of storytellers that analyzes these problems and possible solutions. While their methods, motivations, and experiences may be different, their obstacles are similar. By sharing in a common dialogue, these storytellers can use their different experiences to explore new and innovative solutions to the common problems they face.
Caixin Media and NORDOX plan to hold a panel discussion that will bring together reporters and documentary filmmakers in order to create this much-needed dialogue. In particular, we hope to focus on the similarities and differences in motivation, goals, and techniques between these two groups, their problems and how they can work together to find solutions.
