"Ming Wong and the French New Wave," held throughout the artist's exhibition "Next Year" at UCCA, puts Wong's films in conversation with those of directors who have inspired him, allowing audiences to explore the connections on which much of his work is based.
Directed by the female French New Wave pioneer Agnès Varda, Cléo from 5 to 7 recounts two, existential hours in the life a Cléo, who awaits the medical results of a test for cancer. A key work in feminist cinema, the film is praised for its adept treatment on themes of mortality and despair. Here we inspect the film as it relates to Ming Wong's current works on display.
