Summit on Chinese Painting

2017.9.13
16:00-18:00

Conversation
Location:  Great Hall
Language:  Chinese

In conjunction with the current exhibition “Zhao Bandi: China Party,” the artist’s first institutional solo show in China running from 5 August to 22 October, 2017, UCCA and Zhao Bandi present a “Summit on Chinese Painting.” Artistic mediums outside of painting have become increasingly common in the art world, whereas traditional painting brings to mind crowds swarming art fairs and jaw-dropping market numbers. Beyond this slightly “awkward” phase for painting today, the long-standing and colossal history of painting also makes it difficult for contemporary painters to make progress in their work, especially in view of the development of contemporary painterly language within the vein of art history. After breaking away from Western education systems, Chinese contemporary painting has undergone dramatic changes unique to the local context, and has also contended with entering the market economy. What is the current scene for Chinese painting, and what does its future look like?
