Salvador Allende starts a program for social and political transformations to modernize the state and curb poverty. From the first day, the most conservative sector organized a series of wild strikes against him, meanwhile the United States tried to economically suffocate his government. Despite the economic blockade and the parliamentary boycott (the opposition rejects almost all law initiatives), the political parties supporting Allende got a surprising result in elections held in March 1973: 43.4% of the votes went to the left parties. Since that time the opponents of Allende understood that legal mechanisms were not useful. From that moment their strategy became the organization of a coup to overturn Allende's government.
