In conjunction with the exhibition “Tino Sehgal,” UCCA presents a conversation between Tino Sehgal and Chen Anying coinciding with the first day of the show.

Tino Sehgal creates “constructed situations,” objectless, participatory artworks in which trained interpreters carry out the artist’s instructions. Sehgal’s work invites visitors into unfamiliar situations that shift the parameters of the traditional exhibition. His artworks are entirely immaterial, divorced even from the convention that they be photographically or filmically documented.

Tino Sehgal was born in London and now resides in Berlin. His work has been exhibited in the Tate Triennale, London (2006), Lyon Biennale, France (2007), and Documenta 13, Kassel (2012), as well as in solo shows at prestigious institutions around the world. He won the Golden Lion award at the 2013 Venice Biennale, and in the same year he was selected as one of four finalists for the Turner Prize.

Chen Anying is an associate professor of art theory and aesthetics at the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University.
