As part of the opening weekend of the exhibition “Art Post-Internet,” participating artist Tyler Coburn will present his work NaturallySpeaking.

Employing Macintosh speech recognition software, Susan Bennett, widely known as the original voice of Apple’s Siri, reads a lengthy essay written by the artist. The text recounts famous stories of the births and afterlives of the voice: from Edison’s attempt to make his phonograph a device through which every sound in the history of the world might be heard again, to the scene in Rabelais’s Gargantua and Pantagruel when the warming air thaws the frozen sounds of a past battle. A video component takes the form of a screensaver, which tracks the melting of an ice sculpture of Pantagruel’s ship.

Tyler Coburn is an artist and writer based in New York. His performances, sound works, and installations have been presented at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; the Whitney Museum of American Art; Objectif Exhibitions, Antwerp; and Contemporary Art Center, Vilnius.
