An artist once invented a figure who had a similar age and experience to the artist himself. The only difference in their lives is that the invented figure was living in Istanbul. The artist did not know whether the figure really existed or not, but began writing letters to this person. Nine months later, a reply came and proved the existence of this figure. According to the description in the letter, the artist drew a portrait of his friend living far away. This artist is Shi Wanwan--one of the artists participating to “ON | OFF”, and he is also a father. In this week's artist workshop, Shi Wanwan will share his story of "looking for" and "inventing". He will also work with the attending children, helping them to create their own art works with an open mind.

Shi Wanwan(UCCA exhibiting artist), born in 1981 in Jiangsu province, lives and works in Beijing. Shi Wanwan attempts to insert his own artistic practice into the arbitrary flow of social relations. An Istanbul Painter is a foreign individual of Shi Wanwan’s own imagining, whom he eventually locates through a long process exhausting all possible channels. He undertakes this process not to test his imagination, but to realize a probability.
UCCA hopes to provide an opportunity for families to learn about contemporary art and develop children’s talents in the company of leading artists. Specific children’s workshops are also organized in conjunction with current exhibitions.
