Tang Zhengfan’s first work, Distant, uses thirteen fixed shots to depict the daily lives and dramatics of a city in southern China. The film does not rely upon character, dialogue, or narration; rather, it uses composition, sound, and figures to depict thirteen view of a city. The work’s vision is bold and its depiction of life meticulous, reflecting the expressive brashness of the young director. In 2013, Distant was screened at the Locarno International Film Festival and the Vancouver International Film Festival. For this edition of UCCA Selects, the Center will show Distant, followed by a Q&A session with filmmaker Yang Zhengfan and cinematographer Zhu Shengze.

The UCCA Selects series showcases the most recent Chinese art films and productions from overseas. This program will feature one fiction film and one documentary film each month. The series is curated by Meng Xie.
