ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

“Exhibition on Paper” is a series of talk salons co-hosted by UCCA and VISION magazine. 11 established curators from China and abroad will be invited to curate exhibitions on paper—that is, in the pages of VISION magazine. Afterward, the curators and artists will be invited to UCCA for dialogues in which they discuss their “exhibitions on paper” with UCCA audiences.

In this session, renowned curator Huang Du and sculptor Sui Jianguo will share their stories and talk about the concept behind the first Exhibition on Paper, titled Trespass.

Huang Du (Ph.D.) was born in Lintong, China, in 1965. He now lives and works in Beijing as a curator and art critic. He is currently an editor for Avant-garde Today, and worked as an editor for Meishu (Fine Arts) from 1988 to 2001. In 1997 he was the recipient of the Art Prize from Munich's Lebnach-Hous Museum of Art.

Sui Jianguo was born in Qingdao, Shandong Province, in 1956. He studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, where he is currently an Associate Professor in the Sculpture Department. He has also spent some time in Paris as a visiting professor. Sui has held solo shows in China, Australia, Hong Kong, India and Taiwan and has participated in numerous high-profile exhibitions worldwide. As a sculptor, he tends to work with hard, heavy materials such as stone and steel. Sui Jianguo’s techniques of sealing, binding, tying and hammering create a unique dynamic of association and confrontation between various materials, which reflects the sculptors own inner conflicts and perceptions of life.
