About This Program

Starting in October 2013, each month UCCA and Video Bureau will organize talks, screenings, and other programs on video art.

For the first talk, UCCA has invited video artists Wang Gongxin, Huang Ran, and Li Ran along with Video Bureau founders Chen Tong, Zhu Jia, and Fang Lu to hold a discussion on the topic “What is Video Art?” and individual practice within the field.

Technology has contributed greatly to the dissemination of contemporary art. Among new contemporary art forms, video art is one of the most easily defined and delineated categories. Yet because of the newness of their field, video artists face a dual challenge in producing artwork: they must not only create meaningful work, but also reflect on what the genre is. This question is the key to maintaining the medium’s avant-garde position within contemporary art.
