Bilingual catalogue Hao Liang: Eight Views of Xiaoxiang documents the 2016 UCCA exhibition of the same name, Hao Liang’s first institutional solo show. The exhibition featured eight large ink on silk paintings taking inspiration from the time-honored titular landscape in Central China. Hao Liang’s practice is based on research into the literature, aesthetics, and scholarship of Chinese antiquity, seeking to revive a genre of landscape painting and its material artistry, and imbue it with a modern sensibility. The catalogue consists of two volumes: the first reproduces the works featured in the exhibition, and the second is comprised of essays by curator Sun Dongdong and former UCCA Assistant Curator Yanlin Pan, along with a dialogue between UCCA Director Philip Tinari and the artist. Together, they discuss how “Eight Views of Xiaoxiang” have been constructed and evolved over time, Hao Liang’s observations on traditional shanshui painting’s aesthetics and methodology, questions of modernity in Chinese landscape painting, and how his work is grounded in cultural anthropology-like research.
