The Lied, or “art song,” is a musical form that originated in Europe at the end of the eighteenth century. From Schubert, Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Strauss to countless outstanding contemporary musicians, generations of composers and poets have worked with this unique hybrid form, combining poetry and music.

Lee Mingwei’s Sonic Blossom has its roots in Schubert’s Lieder. During the exhibition, UCCA invites musicologists Tang Qingqing and Yu Zhigang to present a historical overview of German Lieder from Schubert to Schoenberg, accompanied by a performance of quintessential songs in the genre.

Yu Zhigang is a professor and the dean of the Department of Western Music History at the Central Conservatory of Music.

Tang Qingqing is a Lieder conductor at the China Conservatory of Music. In 1995 she enrolled at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, and in 2000 she went to Frankfurt to continue her studies. Later she attended the Franz Liszt School Music in Weimer, Germany, where she earned a degree in German-Austrian Lieder conducting and a Soloist Diploma.
