History is the memory of a nation; and can also be the memory of an individual. We ask all of our young artists: do you have any unforgettable memories? Maybe of one day, or one specific incident in your life? If the answer is “yes,” then do you want to turn this memory into a “history” that you can share with others?

To show the history of a nation, Artist Kan Xua used 170 stop-action frames that together recorded every known imperial tomb in China. You, today’s young artists, will similarly use a pasteboard to make “windows of time” into your memory, which when put together will make a stunning, handmade historical “video.”

Every year, UCCA features exhibitions that inspire and ignite the imagination. This is the first event of our new “artist-led series,” giving kids the chance to engage more actively in our exhibitions and the work of artists on display.

Art has existed since the dawn of mankind: architecture, sculpture, painting, calligraphy, seal engraving, and so on; it is artists, works, theories, movements, and genres. Through the “UCCA Touching Art History Series” we will help children experience the wonders of the history of art.

Stéphane Maggiacomo graduated from the Sorbonne with a Master’s in art history. He studied history, ancient Egyptology, art history, the history of photography, and contemporary art. After completing his arts education, he taught himself to make handicrafts and broke new ground, inspired by the love and enthusiasm that children have for art. He has five years of experience working in libraries, and has a unique understanding and knowledge of children’s art books.

Hou Wei holds two Master’s Degrees in fine arts, photography and audiovisual production from the University of Vincennes in Saint-Denis in Paris, France; he has worked at various art institutions including the Cartier Contemporary Art Foundation and the Paris Jeu de Paume Museum, where he participated in public programs. His photographic work has been exhibited in galleries and photography festivals across China and France. His work focuses mainly on children and cross-cultural issues.
