About This Program

The first edition of the Cannes Film Festival took place in 1949, and today it is one of the most influential in the world. Since its inception, the festival has debuted some of the most important works in the history of film.

In collaboration with Insitut Français de Chine, UCCA presents a selection of French film classics, all winners at the Cannes Film Festival from 1958 to 2010. The retrospective includes Maurice Pialat's Palme d'Or winning film Under the Sun of Satan (1987); Jacques Tati's comedy My Uncle (1958), winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film; Robert Bresson’s structuralist masterpiece The Trial of Joan of Arc (1962); French directorial prodigy Leos Carax's first work Boy Meets Girl (1984); Jacques Audiard’s A Prophet (2010), a widely acclaimed work representative of the young French director’s generation; and Cannes Grand Prix award-winner The Piano Teacher (2001) by Michael Haneke. UCCA will also show Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love (2000), for which Tony Leung won Best Actor at Cannes. The retrospective marks the first mainland China screening for several of the films.

The screening series is curated by UCCA Public Programs Director Meng Xie.
