Burninghham was born in 1936 in Surrey, England. As a child, he attended 10 different schools. When he was 12 years old, he enrolled in Summerhill School, a boarding school in Suffolk, England. Summerhill, an alternative “free” school founded in 1921 by A.S. Neill, had a profound impact on the young Burningham, and would continue to influence him throughout his life and career.
Burningham got his big start when he was hired to illustrate the children’s adventure serial Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (written by Ian Fleming, the same author who created 007 superspy James Bond!) Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, about the adventures of an intrepid little car of the same name, would go on to become one of the world’s best-loved series of children’s books, and John Burningham would go on to become one of the world’s most successful children’s authors, with over 60 books to his name.
