To accompany the first solo exhibition of Haegue Yang in China, "Haegue Yang: Come Shower or Shine, It Is Equally Blissful", the artist and UCCA present Marguerite Duras' major films. Known for her prosaic, internal narrative literature, Duras was also a prolific filmmaker. Yang's longstanding interest in Duras' practice has been crystallized in various modes of her own production, in numerous sculptures and installations as well as staged performances of The Malady of Death, all manifesting the significance of the immaterial and the existential key to Duras' work. In screening these films, Yang attempts to shed light on the notion of ‘voice’ through an intense and committed act of tracing and circling around the central notion of ‘écrire’ [writing]—a synonym of ‘voice.’ This act of tracing also aims to be a continuous production of conceptual doubles, echoing numerous doubles inherent in Duras' works. Yang's abstract and conceptual language can be understood as a quest for and assertion of a subjective truth directed towards an unknown community.
