This month, Indie Film Forum presents two documentaries by Huangweikai: Floating (Piao, 2005) and Disorder (2009). In Floating, he chose a drifter street musician, Yang Jiwei, as his subject. The film intimately documents the daily life of Yang as he performs in the subterranean spaces of Guangzhou’s pedestrian underpasses, and as he deals with the turbulent circumstances of his romantic life. Disorder was one of the most mesmerizing Chinese documentaries in recent years. Rendered in a grainy black and white, the film consists of a random sequence of brief, minute-or-so glimpses into the various spaces of public life. Director Huangweikai will attend the Q&A after the screenings.
