Young, freewheeling language arts teacher Lotus is well-loved by her students, but ostracized by her rigid colleagues. She falls in love with a married man, whose spurned wife humiliates Lotus in front of everyone at her school. In Beijing, Lotus tries to turn over an honest new leaf by working in a news agency. But she soon finds out that what she has to write for the newspaper is false. In trouble again, she takes a job waitressing in a bar and takes a tiny basement apartment. A rich man falls in love with her but she does not love him. Before she decides to accept his love, a policeman tries to rape her, believing her to be a prostitute. With her dreams shattered, Lotus faces two choices: either continue suffering, or give up what she was looking for to live a life of material comfort.
