Directed by Chen Kaige with cinematography by Zhang Yimou, 1984′s Yellow Earth is a rare collaboration between these two major filmmakers. The film depicts the struggles of a girl from Shanxi who tries to run away from an arranged marriage and a life of repression.
Yellow Earth marks the emergence of China's '5th Generation' of film directors. This completely new cinematic style, language, and use of color had a great influence on the directors of this era.
The film received wide-ranging recognition both at home and abroad and was the only Chinese film to be selected for inclusion in A Story of Children and Film, a movie directed by Mark Cousins that will make its Asia debut at UCCA this September.
Accompanying the premiere screening of A Story of Children and Film, UCCA will hold a special screening of Yellow Earth. The screening will provide a rare opportunity to see an analog edition of the movie, a format that enhances the quality of the filmmaking.
